NOT JUST LOCAL, POSTAL
Islay was in danger of losing three vital Post Office outlets. The island also has little available retail space – in fact, anywhere to sell local crafts and products.
IDI has stepped in to help run and protect the Post Offices in Bowmore, Portnahaven and Ballygrant.
None of these three locations was financially viable, so we have combined them into a single multi-functional shop offering:
‘Pound shop’ items
Pet shop items
Local crafts and products
Used items for charity
There is also space to develop and expand the Islay product range to promote local sustainability.
The Community Shop employs 1.5 FTE staff.
FUNDING AND SUSTAINABILITY
This project is income-generating and therefore sustainable.
The general Islay community is behind the project.
The project is safeguarding an essential service and space for local people to sell their wares.
